9th Street Bridge Replacement Project Design Completed
5/7/2008

The Federal Highway Administration, Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (EFLHD) solicited competitive proposals through a “two phase” selection process. Cherry Hill was awarded this exciting $44 million design build project and has selected the firm of Johnson Miriam & Thompson as the engineer of record. The project is located on the 9th Street Bridge over New York Avenue, Amtrak and CSXT Railroad in Northeast Washington D.C. Ward 5. This project consists of the design and construction of a new parallel bridge on an alignment west of the existing 9th Street Bridge, and once the new bridge and adjacent roadways are fully operational, removal of the existing 9th Street Bridge.

With the submission of the For Construction plans on 7 May 2008, the design phase of the project was complete. The completed design incorporates aesthetic treatments such as Eagle Statuary at the north and south approaches, Twin-20 street lighting, ornamental fencing, stars cast into the interior and exterior of the parapet along with street trees and landscaping.

Since completion of the design, the DB team has been working with the Owner to secure the right-of-way acquisitions necessary for construction.

Project highlights include:
  • Construction of a new 620’, 4-span continuous girder bridge.
  • Realignment of the existing structure approaches and construction of 3 new signalized intersections.
  • Reconstruction of 1200’ of New York Avenue.
  • Installation of a new 16” water main across the bridge to the project limits.
  • Construction of 3 new storm water management facilities.
